Halima Begum: Nurturing New Life

Local Diama

In the quiet hours before dawn, Halima Begum receives a call that a baby is ready to enter the world. As a trained birth attendant through ESDR’s maternal health program, she has safely delivered over 50 babies and provided care to countless mothers.

Halima’s training was comprehensive, covering prenatal care, safe delivery practices, postnatal support, and emergency procedures. She learned to recognize complications, provide emotional support, and educate families about maternal and infant health.

“Every birth is a miracle and a responsibility,” Halima says softly. “I hold not just a new life in my hands, but the hopes and dreams of an entire family.” Her gentle manner and skilled care have made her the most trusted birth attendant in the community.

Beyond deliveries, Halima provides prenatal checkups, teaches expectant mothers about nutrition and self-care, and offers postnatal support to ensure healthy recovery. She also educates families about family planning and reproductive health.

Her work has significantly reduced maternal and infant mortality in the community. “When a mother and baby are healthy, the whole family is strong,” she explains. Halima’s dream is to continue her education in nursing and eventually help establish a proper maternal health clinic for her community.
