Noor Ahmed: Wisdom in Times of Change

Providing tree

Under the shade of a large tree that serves as his informal office, Noor Ahmed listens to the concerns of community members who seek his guidance. At 67, he has become the community’s most trusted mediator and counselor through ESDR’s elder engagement program.

Noor’s life experience spans decades of change and challenge. He witnessed his homeland’s transformation, experienced displacement, and now helps others navigate similar difficulties. “Age brings perspective,” he says with a gentle smile. “I’ve learned that most problems have solutions if people are willing to listen to each other.”

ESDR’s program trained Noor in conflict resolution, active listening, and basic counseling techniques. He learned to facilitate discussions between neighbors, help families resolve disputes, and provide emotional support to those struggling with trauma and adjustment.

His approach combines traditional wisdom with modern techniques. He draws on cultural stories and religious teachings while applying structured problem-solving methods. Community members respect his neutrality and trust his discretion.

“Every person who comes to me carries both pain and hope,” Noor reflects. “My job is to help them find the hope and use it to heal the pain.” His work has prevented numerous conflicts from escalating and has helped many individuals and families find peace and direction in difficult times.
